Chungsun Kim
A dynamic and versatile artist, cellist Chungsun Kim has earned acclaim for her expressive playing and exceptional musicianship, captivating audiences across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. She has appeared as a soloist at distinguished venues including Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, and Sejong Recital Hall in Korea.
Ms. Kim has performed as a soloist with ensembles such as the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi, New York Virtuosi, Ars Ensemble, National Repertoire Orchestra, Philharmonia Lawrencia, Sarah Lawrence Symphony Orchestra, and the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra. She has been featured at festivals including the Arcady Music Festival, InterHarmony International Music Festival in Italy, New International Music Festival in Korea, Laurentian Summer Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, Beethoven Festival, Summit Music Festival, and The Academy of Music Festival. In 2005, she gave the world premiere of Craig Morris’s Cello Rhapsody in New York. Her role as faculty and recitalist at the New International Music Festival led to a duo recital in Japan with pianist Kazuko Hayami, sponsored by Araki Industry Corporation. Recent highlights include her acclaimed performance of the Benedictus from Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man at David Geffen Hall. She is currently preparing the release of a recording of the Rachmaninoff and Poulenc sonatas with pianist Nelson Padgett on Hartshorn Classical.
An active chamber musician, Ms. Kim was a founding member of the Amasi Trio, Trio-in- Residence at Nyack College School of Music for twenty-five years, and a member of Trio di Buson, whose recording was released in 2013 under the management of Patricia Alberti Performing Artists Management. Since 2011, she has performed with the Orion Music Ensemble and appeared in the Balcony Chamber Music Series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As an orchestral musician, she has been a member of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Westchester Philharmonic, New York Virtuosi, and Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, and served as soloist and principal cellist of the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra.
A passionate teacher and mentor, Ms. Kim has given master classes at the University of Florida, Ithaca College, and the Ithaca Violoncello Institute, and has taught at the Sarah Lawrence Music Festival and New International Music Festival. She previously served on the faculties of Nyack College and Concordia Conservatory, and is currently on the faculty of The Hotchkiss School and the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Italy.
In 2021, Ms. Kim founded the Community Cello Ensemble, an initiative dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors through music. The ensemble has organized fundraising events in support of the Alzheimer’s Association. This effort is part of her work at The Amasi Music School, where she has served as Director since 2006.
Ms. Kim holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The Juilliard School, where she was a scholarship student of Leonard Rose, Channing Robbins, and Harvey Shapiro.
